Making your own Sourdough is easy!

A sourdough bread is a lacto-fermented product. It does not need yeast, instead it takes advantage of the naturally present bacterias to ferment the dough. It has a mildly sour rich taste that makes it more interesting and more nutritious than it's yeast leavened counterpart.

Making your own bread is a very economic way to get a nutritive and fulfilling food on the table. With a kilogram of organic flour, which costs less than $3, I make about 4 breads. Bread of this quality at the local bakery costs about $4 or $5 for one bread.

Before making sourdough bread, you need sourdough. If a friend of yours have one, he can surely give you some! But if it's not the case, here's how to start your own :

Making a sourdough starter

  • Place 2 cups of water and 2 cups of wheat flour in a large bowl and stir.
  • Place the bowl on a table with a clean towel on top to prevent dust from setting in.
  • Let it stand for 10 days at room temperature. Add 1 tablespoon of flour and 1 tablespoon of water and stir every day.
  • When the mixture is bubbly and has a pleasant sour smell, it is ready to be used!

What to make with your sourdough?

You can make all kinds of breads in all kinds of shape, add nuts, dried fruits, herbs, oil, cheese and get creative! You can also make fantastic pancakes, muffins and pizzas!
